What is Glycolic Acid?

Though glycolic acid is a naturally occurring acid derived from sugar cane, it is manufactured synthetically for cosmetics and industrial use. Cosmetics-grade glycolic acid is far more refined and expensive to manufacture. If you want to get really technical, the formula for glycolic acid is HOCH2COOH and it is the first member of the alpha hydroxy acid family of carboxylic acids. Its biodegradability, solubility, and low toxicity give it superior environmental attributes.

Its value to skincare applications has been immeasurable in recent decades. Besides having been proven to dissolve layers of dead skin build-up without damaging living skin, recent studies are demonstrating that the presence of glycolic acid on the skin accelerates keratin and collagen production, reversing the slowdown of new skin generation that comes with age.
